Abstract
In this research, the polysemy of locative prepositions in Ilami Kurdish dialect has been investigated and it is also shown that the cognitive semantics approach provides a better explanation of the semantic structure of locative prepositions. The aim of the current research is to conduct a semantic research on a limited body of language in order to obtain a generalizable result. This research is a theoretical and descriptive research (non-laboratory). For this purpose, the polysemous approach of Tyler and Evans (2003) has been used in the framework of cognitive semantics for data analysis. In this regard, 14 locative prepositions in Ilami Kurdish were extracted from everyday conversations of this dialect and analyzed using a cognitive approach. Finally, it was found that Ilami Kurdish dialect, like other dialects, has various locative prepositions and the approach of Cognitive semantics is a very suitable method for examining this kind of prepositions in the Ilami Kurdish dialect, and we also showed how to derive other concepts of a preposition from its primary concept in the cognitive framework, and we said that all these concepts are systematically and carefully derived according to  the criteria of Tyler and Evans, from the first meaning and concept of the word.
